About The Author

Sherry Lowell-Lewis has spoken internationally on three continents, starting as a child of ten. She has been teaching communication courses, including public speaking, for more than twenty-five years, in English and Spanish. She has served as a simultaneous translator at training sessions in Business and Professional Communication seminars, and conducted bilingual training at the University of Texas, El Paso. For more than 20 years, she has served on the Steering Committee and appears on live television as a participant for the National Issues Forum of El Paso. Her work in Communication Apprehension (also known as Communication Anxiety) began twenty years ago, working with Dr. Ron Bassett at the University of Texas at El Paso. She continues to use and improve on Dr. Bassett's strategies for managing or eliminating Communication Apprehension (COMM-APP).

Ms. Lowell-Lewis has always had an interest in exploring second language acquisition. Her research extends from 1987-present. She implements her experiences living overseas and her own struggles to learn other languages into her teaching of ESOL speech. She has taught Public Speaking with bilingual emphasis at the University of Texas, El Paso. As a teacher of Bilingual Public Speaking, her knowledge and experience helped her students to achieve higher levels of competence, in two languages.

Outside of the classroom, Ms. Lowell-Lewis conducts workshops in speech preparation, with an emphasis on COMM-APP reduction, and speaking skills. The workshops also include assistance in proper outlining techniques source citation, and plagiarism avoidance. She has presented “Scared Speechless” numerous times at UTEP and El Paso Community College; it deals with Communication Anxiety Reduction, and is presented to Faculty and graduate students from different Schools and Majors.`

In addition to her teaching duties, Ms. Lowell-Lewis has performed in English, Spanish and Japanese on stages around the world. In 2015, she was in a PBS-sponsored televised bi-national, bilingual series of performances of a cutting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, as the Nodriza, or Nurse. The show was presented all over El Paso, at libraries and other venues, as well as its inaugural at UACJ, a University in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico in February, 2015.

Ms. Lowell-Lewis also records on-hold messages for telephone systems and narration for computer training programs, in English and Spanish. She has recorded hundreds of recordings for television and radio over the years, appearing in dozens of television commercials and films.

In 2005, Ms. Lowell-Lewis was commissioned to write a play about women in mathematics, for a Tensor grant. It was titled, “Count Her In!” It was based on research that was done by seven high school students from Chapin High School and two graduate students from UTEP. It covered the lives and works of six women mathematicians, from the oldest, Hypatia to the most recent, Sarah Flannery, who published her first book at the age of 16. The play was revived in 2015 for its ten year anniversary. She is adapting it for the screen, as well.

“How To Say What To Say” is her first text book. She is also working on a text book to accompany her Cinematic Directors course on Billy Wilder, called “Watching Wilder.”
